CHEM eBook of the Week – Sep 29-Oct 5

September 29th, 2009

Nanoscale Phenomena: Fundamentals and Applications
Horst Hahn, Anatoli Sidorenko, and Ion Tiginyanu, Eds.
Springer Berlin Heidelberg © 2009

cover-medium

“The main intention of the editors of the book is the demonstration of the intrinsic correlation and mutual influence of three important components of nanoscience: new phenomena – nanomaterials – nanodevices. This is the organizing concept of the book. To discover new phenomena it is necessary to develop novel nanotechnological processes for fabrication of nanomaterials. Nanostructures and new phenomena serve as the base for the development of novel nanoelectronic devices and systems. The articles selected for the book illustrate this interrelation.”

MEL’s Database of the Week for 9/25

September 25th, 2009

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: ABI/INFORM Global, from Proquest.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below our banner.

Description/focus: ABI/INFORM Global is one of the most comprehensive business databases, covering over 3000 publications.  Besides business and management magazines and journals, it includes non-periodical content such as EIU ViewsWire, Business Dissertations, Author Profiles, and Business Cases.

Start with this hint: Once you have entered a search term and looked at your ABI/INFORM Global list of results, you may want to see the search executed in another database.  Click on Databases selected under the orange and green tabs across the top, select one or more databases, click Continue, click Search.  This is especially useful if you have a complex search statement.  If full text is not an option, the icon Find It @ Purdue Libraries that appears in the citations will lead you to the full text in another database.

Why you should know this database: Almost all of our Subject Guides include ABI/INFORM Global as a recommended database for articles.  Once you are satisfied with your search statement, one click turns it into an RSS feed.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: ABI/INFORM Global gives researchers at all levels access to business and financial information, with the capability to narrow the search to scholarly journals, trade publications, or dissertations.

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: PAIS International, from CSA.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below our banner.

Description/focus: PAIS International gives access to the international literature in public affairs, social policies, and international relations. This database contains citations to government documents, grey literature, statistical directories, publications of international agencies, Internet material, conference reports, research reports, and articles.

Why you should know this database: PAIS International is a unique resource for anyone conducting research on international relations, global public policy, social policies, or world affairs.  It includes information about political, economic, and cultural issues affecting communities, countries, governments, and society.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: PAIS International provides perspective on public affairs and policies, and international relations, which is basic to understanding topics such as globalization, economic growth, financial markets, labor issues, worldwide productivity, sustainable development, and others.

New Version of ChemBioDraw available

September 11th, 2009

The latest version of ChemBioDraw, v12, is now available for download.  All Purdue-affiliated students, staff and box_chembiodraw_80faculty can download their own copy of ChemBioDraw for installation via  a site license funded by the Purdue Libraries.  This structure drawing suite allows the user to draw accurate, chemically-aware structures for use in database queries, preparation of publication-quality graphics, and entry for modeling and other programs that require an electronic description of molecules and reactions.

It also provides a drawing tool for biological pathways. It includes common pathway elements (membranes, DNA, enzymes, receptors, etc.) as well as the ability to import other elements.

Instructions on how to download and install the latest version are can be found on this page.

Please note, users that have upgraded to Windows 64-bit system or the latest Mac OS, Snow Leopard, have reported issues with ChemBioDraw not working properly.  ChemBioDraw was not tested for these systems and it not fully supported by CambridgeSoft at this time.

You can also view a one-hour webinar highlighting the latest features of ChemBioDraw v12.
