MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/30/10

MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/30/10

April 30th, 2010

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: TableBase, from Gale Cengage Learning.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: TableBase is a database of tabular information.

Start with this hint: TableBase is the companion to Business & Industry, an articles database.  The records in TableBase, however, are just the tables and have been stripped of the accompanying text.  In this database it is best to start with a simple search.  For example, enter coffee (or another term of your choosing) in the search box and notice that the titles displayed in the results list are precise and descriptive, aiding in more exact selection.  In addition to describing the subject of the table, the title usually includes the country and date. If you click on a record link, you can see the record of the article from which the table has been pulled.  You can, of course, go to advanced search and narrow the results with additional terms.

Why you should know this database: TableBase company and industry records cover market share, market size, capacity, production, statistics and demographics..

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: TableBase is the source for students looking for a list, whether it is the top producers of a product, a forecast in dollars and percentage, market segmentation, sales, or other parameters.

Cost: Paid annually by the Libraries.

MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/23/10

April 23rd, 2010

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: Uniworld, from Uniworld Business Publications.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: Uniworld is an online directory of American companies operating in foreign countries and foreign companies operating in the United States.

Start with this hint: Uniworld is a simple database.  First select from the two categories, American Firms Operating in Foreign Countries or Foreign Firms Operating in the United States, and then narrow down your search by selecting parameters on the ensuing page.  Options to focus your search are country, region, the state where the company is located, zip code, a keyword describing the product or service, industry code, revenue, and others.  After selecting the parameters, click Next to see results and then select a format, choosing a spreadsheet to download or a list to display.  A personal profile can be set up and searches can be saved.

Why you should know this database: Uniworld’s branch location dataset includes the non-headquarters United States locations of American multinational firms.  This provides all locations (inside and outside) the United States, making it easy for a user to find a firm that is local.  In the keyword search field it is possible to search for aspects such as research & development or nanotechnologyUniworld includes both public and private companies and is updated weekly, with every firm edited at least once a year. Although Uniworld was selected to support students as they build their careers, it is also a good source of company information.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: Students can identify foreign companies by product or by income level.

Cost: Paid annually by the Libraries, the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO), and Graduate Career Services (GCS) in the Krannert School of Management.

MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/16/10

April 16th, 2010

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: Morningstar Document Research, from Morningstar.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: Morningstar Document Research is a database that contains all electronically filed Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents from 1994 to the present.

Start with this hint: The Morningstar Document Research home page is the advanced search page.  You can search for information about a company by entering the ticker (goog for example) or the name of the company.  When the company of interest is displayed you can then choose from its SEC filings, or get other details by clicking on the links for Profile, Business Section, Quotes/Charts/News, Insider Summary, and others. The main search page includes a focused word search field, geographic filter (country, state, region, others), and a financial filter. Further down on the home screen, you can also see company filings within an industry.  The menu on the left includes a link to search for Mutual Funds.

Why you should know this database: An important aspect of Morningstar Document Research is the ability to search across multiple company document types.  It is often used to search for aspects such as ‘research & development’ or for some key financial element like ‘poison pill’.  Thus a faculty member could research what companies are implementing such things by text-searching the documents… including the footnotes… where information is often “hidden”.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: A researcher can search not only an individual company but can also search for tendencies, activities, actions, etc. across multiple companies or groups of companies within industries.

Cost:  5 seats, paid annually by the Libraries and the Accounting and Finance areas in the Krannert School of Management.

MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/9/10

April 9th, 2010

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: SimplyMap, from Geographic Research, Inc.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: SimplyMap is a graphical interface that displays demographic, business, and marketing data.

Start with this hint: Our subscription to SimplyMap only permits 2 simultaneous users so try again later if you cannot connect.  SimplyMap works best with the creation of a personal workspace, but you can login to just try it.  Once you are in SimplyMap, select your geographical location on the left and hit Go. Next click on the Variables tab where you can search (ok) or browse (better) to select characteristics such as population by age, race, or income.  Click Add Selected Variables.  You can add another geographic area if you want a comparison, and add more variables such as employment, language, or education. Close the Variables tab and hit Update to redraw the map.   The map displays one variable at a time.  To see the raw data in a spreadsheet, select the Reports tab.

Why you should know this database: One of the features offered through our subscription to SimplyMap is the opportunity to set up a “Professor Workspace” where you can select the geographic location and variables for a space to share with your class. The datasets include governmental data (the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Expenditure Survey), as well as survey data gathered by companies such as MRI, Dun & Bradstreet, Environics Analytics, and the Neilson Company (Choices 3). Because usage is not intuitive, however, we recommend the tutorial videos.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: We can arrange one-on-one training so you can get the most efficient use of this product.

Cost:  2 seats, paid annually by the Libraries.

MEL’s Database of the Week for 4/2/10

April 2nd, 2010

Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).  These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

Database name: RIA Checkpoint, from Thomson Reuters.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/mel, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below our banner.

Description/focus: RIA Checkpoint is the database for tax research.

Start with this hint: The link for RIA Checkpoint lands at the Research tab.  This is where tax and accounting professionals can search rulings, IRS publications, SEC filings, or accounting standards and regulations.  These can be searched by keyword, code, case, or by clicking on More to bring up specific search templates.  Non-professionals will find documents and publications of interest on the Research page through the link to Form/Line Finder, and on the Newsstand tab.

Why you should know this database: Tax and accounting professionals can use RIA Checkpoint to research supporting cases.  Some publications that might interest non-professionals can be seen at the Home tab which includes a link, for example, to an analysis of the tax and benefits provisions of the 2010 Health Care Act.  The Tools tab has calculators for working out payments for autos, mortgages, credit cards, and other business and personal financial concerns.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: Students studying tax and accounting can find cases to support answers to tax questions and can use the handy Citator button to find related cases.

Cost: Paid annually by the Libraries.

Special thanks today to Professor Hatcher for his help in navigating through RIA Checkpoint.  As he says, ”It’s not what you know, it’s what you can find out.”
