Parrish Library’s database of the week (10/12/12): IBISWorld

October 12th, 2012

Welcome to Database of the Week, a feature from the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics.  These weekly snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

This Week’s Featured Database: IBISWorld, from IBISWorld.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/parrish, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: IBISWorld provides access to domestic and global industry reports.

Start with this hint: The IBISWorld opening page lets you enter a term in the search box for a basic search, browse domestic or global industry research, link to their reports on industries in China, or scroll through the list of SIC codes for a relevant report. A key word search for a company will generate a list of all the industry reports and Business Environment reports that name that company.  See here for a short demonstration of a basic IBISWorld search.

Why you should know this database:  IBISWorld recently updated its interface, but the content is still comprehensive. Reports can be  printed and statistics can be downloaded to Excel. Reports are updated 3 to 4 times a year with additional updates to reflect important changes in an industry’s market.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: The IBISWorld industry intelligence reports break down to sections such as Industry at a Glance, Industry Life Cycle, Operating Conditions, and others. The information in these reports is accessible and easy to understand.

Tags: companies, consumers, exportable excel, industries, international markets, market research, market segments, products, SIC codes, spreadsheets, statistics

Cost:  Academic subscription paid by the Libraries annually.

Parrish Library’s database of the week (10/5/12): WARC, from World Advertising Research Center Ltd.

October 5th, 2012

Welcome to Database of the Week, a feature from the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics.  These weekly snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.

This Week’s Featured Database: WARC, from World Advertising Research Center Ltd.

Link: www.lib.purdue.edu/parrish, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases alpha list right below the Libraries’ search box.

Description/focus: WARC is a marketing and advertising information service used by media and market research agencies.

Start with this hint: The WARC interface is straightforward, letting you search by type of content (trends, cases, news, forecasts), or by keyword.  If you click on one of the fields along the top, you’ll see the options for further breakdown.  For example, click on TOPICS and see industries, markets, and guides.  A click to the industry Topic Page for Pharmaceutical & Health shows scholarly research articles, case studies, and company profiles.  Back at the top, enter your subject in the search box at the top of the page… try ethics.  See here for a short demonstration of a basic WARC search.

Why you should know this database: WARC content includes news stories, case studies, conference papers, best practice guides, speeches, data, scholarly journals, and WARC’s own reports.  The subjects covered include communications, media research, market research, trends, and more.

How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: Searching in WARC is very easy to do so even students who are novice database searchers will be able to find marketing or consumer information.

Tags:  articles, communications, consumers, countries, datasets, industries, market research, media, news, products, scholarly journals

Cost: Paid by the Libraries annually.
