In this post, we highlight those early Purdue students from India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A university publication titled &#8220;In Recognition of the World at Purdue&#8217;s Doorstep 1887 &#8211; 1955&#8221; identifies two students who were likely the first to come from India to study at Purdue. The next student from India was <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"http:\/\/earchives.lib.purdue.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/debris\/id\/8748\">Albert Norton<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">. As noted in the necrology, Norton passed away on October 6, 1906.\u00a0 <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1rem\" href=\"http:\/\/earchives.lib.purdue.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/debris\/id\/29573\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H.D. As stated below his photo, Das Gupta came from India in October 1911, and he spent his first year at Wisconsin. He then came to Purdue and was able to complete his studies in three years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Also among the Class of 1914 was Narendra Nath Sen.\u00a0 Like Gupta, Sen first spent a year at the University of Wisconsin before transferring to Purdue. Per an <em>Exponent<\/em> article from 1921, six students from India made their way to Purdue and faced unique challenges. Those students also formed the Purdue Hindusthan Association, a local chapter of a national organization to support students from India as they represent their culture in America.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the men featured in the <em>Exponent\u00a0<\/em>article\u00a0appear in the <em>Debris:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3058\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption campus, supported other international students, and provided insight into what it meant to travel across the globe to study at a university far from home.<\/p>\n<p>Per statistics gathered for 1941-1942, there were no students from India at Purdue, but by 1946 the\u00a0<em>Lafayette Journal and Courier<\/em> reported that there were ten students from India at Purdue that year.<\/p>\n<div This short-lived publication focused on news and events in India for those who were far from home.
