Purdue Libraries Database of the Week: Mergers and Acquisitions, from Thomson Reuters

February 6th, 2015

Welcome to Database of the Week.  This feature from the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics is intended to give you a brief introduction to a database that you may not know, with only basic information to get you started.  Hopefully, you will be tempted to explore this or other databases.

This Week’s Featured Database:  Mergers and Acquisitions, from Thomson Reuters

Find it: www.lib.purdue.edu/parrish, Under the column headed Collections, click on List of Business Databases. This database only works in the Internet Explorer browser.

Description/focus: The database has comprehensive details on all announced deals, whether completed or uncompleted. The database covers U.S. targets 1979 to present and Non U.S. targets 1985 to present. Data are unavailable for the last thirty days as a condition of our academic subscription.  Data available include full financial details, advisors and fees, premiums paid, etc.

Thomson’s data were formerly collected by Securities Data Corporation and accessed through a program called SDC Platinum. SDC Platinum will often appear as a source in empirical research, but the data are the same in Thomson ONE.

Start with this hint: Mergers and Acquisitions is now available in Thomson One. To get to Mergers and Acquisitions, click on the Screening & Analysis button at the top of the homepage. From here, check the box next to All Mergers and Acquisitions and then click Continue. In the box on the left, there is an item list with things like company info, deal info, etc. Each of these can be expanded to be more specific. To open one of these and search, you need to click on the item you want to search for. A new window will open. Use the box according to what you are searching for and click Execute Search.

Click here to see the basics of searching Mergers and Acquisitions.

Why you should know this database: It is the premier source for mergers & acquisitions data here at Purdue.

How this will help students: Numerous courses within the School of Management, Consumer & Family Sciences, and Hospitality & Tourism need financial details on corporate merger transactions that cannot be found across the web.
