Hicks Card Swipe Access Unavailable beginning Friday, March 18 at 5 p.m.

Due to a scheduled outage, there will be no PUID Card Swipe Access to Hicks Undergraduate Library from 5:00 p.m. Friday March 18 through 1:00 p.m. Sunday March 20.   Normal hours resume at 1:00 pm Sunday, March 20.

The Libraries hours website has been updated to reflect this change.

Purdue Libraries Faculty Member Recognized as Collaborator on Award-winning Project

The Veterinary Medicine Section of the Medical Library Association will receive the MLA Section Project of the Year award at the 2016 annual meeting May 15-18 for Promoting and Advocating for the Profession: Creating a Multi-Faceted Illustrated History of the Veterinary Medical Libraries Section (VMLS) and Its Impact. Gretchen Stephens, associate professor and veterinary medicine liaison, health & life sciences, Purdue University Libraries, was the section archivist and a collaborator on the project. Purdue Research Team Investigates Disaster Recovery

One of the research teams for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and the 21^st Century Grand Challenges project has just released their initial findings that coincides with the 4-year anniversary of the Southern Indiana tornadoes (March 2-3). Their ongoing research focuses on these communities and how they handled the after-effects of the tornado devastation.

The title of the research project is “Resilient Communities: Strengthening Post-Disaster Recovery by Understanding Interdependent Social and Physical Networks.”

The team conducted its study as part of an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant and the 21st Century Grand Challenges project, an initiative created by President Barack Obama in 2013 to harness science, technology and innovation to solve important national or global problems. The $538,000 grant was issued to Purdue University in March 2014 for a project titled “Catalyzing the Involvement of Humanists and Social Scientists in Grand Challenge Initiatives,” led by Principal Investigator Jim Mullins, dean of libraries and Esther Ellis Norton Professor.

Purdue Libraries Seeking User Test Participants for Spring 2016

Purdue University Libraries is conducting user tests of new designs of the library website and search interface. In the test participants will be asked to complete a set of tasks on the library website and provide feedback. Participation of this user test is voluntary. The user test is expected to take up to 1 hour of time. Participants will receive $10 if they complete the test.

Participant requirements:

• Age 18 or older with high school diploma or equivalent;
• Normal or corrected normal vision;
• Currently enrolled Purdue University student, staff or faculty;
• Experience of using the Purdue University Libraries website as normal user.

If you are interested, please first complete the participant screening survey and we will notify you the test schedule.

Parrish Library Database of the Week: Mediamark Reporter

Welcome to Database of the Week, a feature from the Parrish Library. Each of these weekly snapshots will give you a very brief introduction to the basic features of one of our specialized subscription databases. This week’s database is Mediamark Reporter brought to you by GfK Mediamark Research & Intelligence, LLC.

Link: http://guides.lib.purdue.edu/businessdatabases is the alphabetical list of the databases specially selected for those in a business program of study. Access the databases off-campus with your Purdue login and password.

Focus: Mediamark Reporter provides information on demographics, lifestyles, product and brand usage, and advertising media preferences reported by a sample of over 25,000 United States consumers.

Search: If it is your first time using Mediamark Reporter, you will have to create an account using your Purdue email and a password of your choosing. In this database you can find out which population groups are the best potential markets for a product or service. The best target groups have scores of 100 or higher in the Index column.

Why you should know this database: Mediamark Reporter includes historic demographic data back to 2005 so comparisons can be made.

Why should students know this database: A marketing plan should include data on user preferences. This kind of information is also included in SimplyMap but Mediamark Reporter displays the data in a spreadsheet which might be more straightforward than a geographic display for some students.

Cost: $2,000.00, paid annually by the Libraries.

James L. Mullins wins 2016 Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award

James L. Mullins, dean of libraries and Esther Ellis Norton professor at Purdue University, has been named the 2016 winner of the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award. Mullins will receive a cash award and citation during the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Named in honor of one of the pioneers of library automation, the Atkinson Award recognizes an academic librarian who has made significant contributions in the area of library automation or management and has made notable improvements in library services or research.

“Through his pioneering vision and drive for innovation, Dr. James (Jim) Mullins has led the transformation of Purdue University Libraries into a premier, profession leading 21^st century academic and research library,” said Colby Riggs, Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award committee chair and project coordinator at the University of California, Irvine. “He is internationally recognized as a risk-taking, creative, and visionary leader in the academic and research library profession with a demonstrated commitment to information literacy, data research services, digital scholarship, scholarly communication, diversity, and innovation and collaboration with the university and library community.

“Dr. Mullins is a passionate believer in information literacy and staunch advocate for its integration into curriculum and research,” continued Riggs. “At Purdue, he was able to establish the W. Wayne Booker Endowed Chair in Information Literacy, a first in the nation.

“It was Dr. Mullins’ initiative that a new building was conceived and designed which embraced the active learning concept,” Riggs added. “The Wilmeth Active Learning Center (WALC), a 164,000 square foot facility is under construction in the center of campus. The space blends teaching spaces, library/information services, formal study spaces, collaborative work areas and informal learning spaces and will be the site of 27 collaborative active learning classrooms and six consolidated engineering and science libraries when it opens in 2017.”

“Dr. Mullins was at the forefront of identifying the need for data management and preservation services, having played a pivotal role in positioning the Libraries to partner with researchers to create a data repository known as the Purdue University Research Repository (PURR). This resulted in the Libraries developing a suite of data services including Data Curation Profiles and consultations for Data Management Plans,” said Riggs. “Additionally, advancing scholarly communication is one of Dr. Mullins’ top priorities. To this end he has created a Libraries Scholarly Publishing Services division, which includes the institutional repository, and strategically combined it with the Purdue University Press, another first in the nation. He has helped foster innovation in publishing as a founding member of the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC), an independent, community-led membership association led by college and university libraries to support the creation, dissemination, and curation of scholarly works.”

Mullins received his B.A. and M.A.L.S from the University of Iowa, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University. Under his leadership, Purdue University Libraries was named the recipient of the 2015 ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in the university category.

The Hugh C. Atkinson Award is jointly sponsored by four divisions of the American Library Association: the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) and the Library and Information Technology Association (LITA). The award is funded from an endowment established to honor Hugh C. Atkinson.
