Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL). These database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n
This Week\u2019s Featured Database: <\/strong>EconLit, <\/em>from the American Economic Association.<\/p>\n Link:<\/strong> www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below the Libraries\u2019 search box.<\/p>\n Description\/focus:<\/strong> EconLit <\/em>is an index of more than 30 years of economics literature from around the world.<\/p>\n Start with this hint: <\/strong>Note that <\/strong>EconLit<\/em> is an index, not a full text database.\u00a0 This is not a barrier to the full text of hits resulting from a search, however, because of the Find it at Purdue<\/strong> feature available in all of our databases.\u00a0 The EBSCOhost interface for EconLit<\/em> is simple to understand.\u00a0 Use the option for advanced search so that you can narrow your search results by year or publication type.\u00a0 As an example, enter the term \u201cbiotechnology\u201d as a basic search and the database returns more than 4500 hits from journals, books, working papers and dissertations.\u00a0 If you use\u00a0 the Advanced Search<\/strong> and limit to the past 10 years of journal articles , then add \u201cagricultural\u201d as a subject, the result is a manageable list of 430 results. When you have identified a title that is applicable to your topic, click on Find it at Purdue<\/strong> which then generates a search in the Libraries\u2019 eJournal Finder<\/strong> (SFX).<\/p>\n Why you should know this database:<\/strong> Because of its specialized subject coverage, any program that includes aspects of economics can include a list of resources developed with the use of EconLit<\/em>.<\/p>\n How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> Students will find EconLit<\/em> easy to navigate and will appreciate the options for refining results by year and source type.<\/p>\n Compared to Google:<\/strong> A search in Advanced Google Scholar<\/em> for \u201ceconomics\u201d and \u201cbiotechnology\u201d for the years 1999-2010 results in 17,900 hits.<\/p>\n Cost:<\/strong> No cost to Purdue University Libraries.
