{"id":10927,"date":"2009-11-16T10:40:57","date_gmt":"2009-11-16T14:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=430"},"modified":"2009-11-16T10:40:57","modified_gmt":"2009-11-16T14:40:57","slug":"mels-database-of-the-week-for-1113-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/2009\/11\/16\/mels-database-of-the-week-for-1113-2\/","title":{"rendered":"MEL&#8217;s Database of the Week for 11\/13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Database of the Week &#8212; a feature from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).\u00a0 These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This Week\u2019s Featured Database: <\/strong> <em>LexisNexis Statistical, <\/em>from LexisNexis, Inc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Link:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel\">www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down<em> Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list below the Libraries\u2019 search box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description\/focus:<\/strong> <em>LexisNexis Statistical <\/em>is a collection of statistical tables and datasets collected from federal agencies, the United Nations, the World Bank and other sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with this hint: <\/strong>Admittedly the <em>LexisNexis Statistical<\/em> interface is less than elegant.\u00a0 Selecting from the basic table\/publication menu on the left will get different results for the same term since they are searching different sources. A search in<strong> Find a Table<\/strong> for \u201csmall businesses\u201d nets 866 hits.\u00a0 If you switch to <strong>Find a Publication<\/strong>, be sure to check the box next to <strong>Limit to abstracts that have full text attachments<\/strong>; the resulting list for \u201csmall businesses\u201d here will be 322 hits. If your term doesn\u2019t get any results, go to the link for the <strong>Subject List<\/strong> next to the search field.\u00a0 Contrariwise, if there are too many results, narrow your results by selecting one parameter, such as Geographic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should know this database: <\/strong><em>LexisNexis Company Statistical,<\/em> though not our friendliest interface, is worth the patience it may call for.\u00a0 Troll the list of subjects to see the extensive coverage available.\u00a0 The results can be limited to statistics from the Federal government,\u00a0 state governments and private sources, or international sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> Statistics are critical for decision making and with <em>LexisNexis Statistical<\/em> students don\u2019t have to hunt for the right government agency to find the data they need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost: P<\/strong>aid by the Libraries annually.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Database of the Week comes to you from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).
