Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL). These database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n
This Week\u2019s Featured Database: <\/strong>SimplyMap <\/em>from Geographic Research, Inc..<\/p>\n Link:<\/strong> www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below the Libraries\u2019 search box.<\/p>\n Description\/focus:<\/strong> SimplyMap <\/em> provides demographic, business, and marketing data.<\/p>\n Start with this hint: <\/strong>Create a personal workspace on your first visit to SimplyMap.<\/em> Begin with a Location<\/strong>, such as Florida, <\/em>narrow to Pinellas County,<\/em> and hit Go<\/strong>. To select elements to display on the map, click the Variables<\/strong> tab and start expanding categories (click the +<\/strong>) to narrow your choices.\u00a0 You can pick Census Data<\/em>, Consumer Expenditure<\/em> (for example, expand Housing Related<\/em> to see\u00a0Child<\/em> care<\/em>), Business Counts<\/em> (narrow by SIC Code), Market Segments<\/em> (including, for example, In the Armed Forces<\/em>), Quality of Life<\/em> (showing crime, earthquakes, temperatures), (Consumer<\/em> Price Index, MRI Consumer Data, Life Stages<\/em>; and Simmons Data<\/em> (formerly Choices 3<\/em>).\u00a0 Click Add Selected Variables<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 The information that is represented on the map but can also be presented in a spreadsheet: click on the top tab Reports<\/strong> and then Update Report<\/strong>. Each side tab offers a different way of finding information.\u00a0 For example, in Points<\/strong> if you enter Starbucks<\/em> the map will show you the locations of the Starbucks coffee shops in the area.<\/p>\n Why you should know this database:<\/strong> SimplyMap<\/em> has such an incredible amount of data that there is the potential for it to be overwhelming, but it definitely warrants exploring. The Tutorial Videos<\/strong> are excellent guides to help get you started with this database and are recommended.\u00a0 In addition, one-on-one training is available from the vendor.<\/p>\n How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> SimplyMap<\/em> online workspaces can be shared.\u00a0 This database can be used for any class that requires a business plan or forecasting.<\/p>\n Compared to Google:<\/strong> Google does show a list of demographic maps, but we were not able to find any that were interactive.<\/p>\n Cost:<\/strong>\u00a0 2 simultaneous users, paid annually by the Libraries.<\/p>\n ——————————<\/p>\n Database of the Week comes to you from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).
