{"id":1163,"date":"2010-10-01T11:59:32","date_gmt":"2010-10-01T15:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2010-10-01T11:59:32","modified_gmt":"2010-10-01T15:59:32","slug":"mels-database-of-the-week-for-10110","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/2010\/10\/01\/mels-database-of-the-week-for-10110\/","title":{"rendered":"MEL&#8217;s Database of the Week for 10\/1\/10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to this feature from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).\u00a0 These database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Database name:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/owa.purdue.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ff58bb5d008a4e2cbb9f91af825a7c4a&amp;URL=http%3a%2f%2flynda.com%2f\" target=\"_blank\"><em>LexisNexis Academic<\/em><\/a> Legal, from LexisNexis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Link:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel\" target=\"_blank\">www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down<em> Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below the Libraries\u2019 search box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description\/focus:<\/strong> <em>LexisNexis Academic<\/em> Legal provides the means for legal research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with this hint: <\/strong>The <em>LexisNexis Academic <\/em><strong>Easy Search<\/strong> page has 2 ways to begin your legal research.\u00a0 In the top row center panel, called <em>Look up a Legal Case<\/em>, there are options to get a case <em>By Citation, By Parties, <\/em>or<em> By Topic<\/em>.\u00a0 A Google-type keyword search is not a good choice for legal research.\u00a0 The best way to find a case is to search by citation number. When you search by citation, it must be in Bluebook format, which includes punctuation\u2026 you can see the difference if you search with their example twice, once as U.S. (note the periods) and once with just US.\u00a0 You could also search by one or more of the names of the parties involved.\u00a0 A search by <em>Topic<\/em> will likely result in a huge number of hits.\u00a0 The second option for legal research is accessed through the panel on the left of <strong>Easy Search<\/strong>.\u00a0 Click on <strong>US Legal<\/strong>, select an area from the expanded list, and use the resulting form to select options such as time span and jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should know this tool:<\/strong> <em>LexisNexis Academic <\/em>includes federal cases and some state cases.\u00a0 It also includes Statutes, Codes, &amp; Regulations, as well as the full text of many Law Review journals, which provide case background, analysis, and opinions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How this will help students:<\/strong> The expanded list of <strong>US Legal<\/strong> options includes <strong>Landmark Cases<\/strong>.\u00a0 This is a unique opportunity for students to locate and read the actual Supreme Court cases that have been landmarks in the history of the US judicial system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost:<\/strong> <em>LexisNexis Academic<\/em> is a subscription service paid by the Libraries annually; for more information contact <a href=\"https:\/\/owa.purdue.edu\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=ff58bb5d008a4e2cbb9f91af825a7c4a&amp;URL=mailto%3amdugan%40purdue.edu\">mdugan@purdue.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Database of the Week comes to you from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).
