Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics Library. These database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n
This Week\u2019s Featured Database:<\/strong> USDA Economics, Statistics, and Market Information System (ESMIS)<\/em>,\u00a0 <\/em>from the United States Department of Agriculture.<\/em><\/p>\n Link:<\/strong> www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below the Libraries\u2019 search box, shown in this short clip<\/a>.<\/p>\n Description\/focus:<\/strong> USDA Economics, Statistics, and Market Information System <\/em>provides reports and datasets from several USDA agencies.<\/p>\n Start with this hint: <\/strong>The ESMIS<\/em> interface is simple and direct.\u00a0 The panel on the left links to browsing by agency or subject but also allows a specific title search.\u00a0 The Browse by Subject <\/strong>titles are not all intuitive, so,\u00a0for example, Baseline<\/strong> actually links to Agricultural Baseline Projection Tables<\/em> including the latest long-term projection table to the year 2020.\u00a0 Navigation throughout the site is easy and the pages are quick to load. All tables and reports can be downloaded. See a demonstration here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Why you should know this database:<\/strong> ESMIS <\/em>content includes historical information, daily reports on some subjects, and world markets and trade.<\/p>\n How this database can be integrated into the curriculum: <\/strong>Students might not always think first of the USDA\u00a0as a source of\u00a0information (for example, Wine<\/em> is included in Specialty Agriculture<\/strong>)\u00a0but <\/strong>ESMIS<\/em> should be seen as a portal to information that has been collected by the federal government for the past two centuries.\u00a0 Besides gaining easy access to tables and reports,\u00a0students can contact the USDA for help with finding information not readily available online.<\/p>\n Cost:<\/strong> This is a free service provided by the United States Department of Agriculture.<\/p>\n ——————————<\/p>\n Database of the Week comes to you from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).
