{"id":176,"date":"2009-09-11T11:05:56","date_gmt":"2009-09-11T15:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=176"},"modified":"2015-04-23T11:26:02","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T15:26:02","slug":"mels-database-of-the-week-for-911","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/2009\/09\/11\/mels-database-of-the-week-for-911\/","title":{"rendered":"MEL&#8217;s Database of the Week for 9\/11"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Database of the Week &#8212; a feature from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).\u00a0 These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Database name:<\/strong> <em> BizMiner<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Link:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel\">www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down<em> Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below our banner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description\/focus:<\/strong> <em>BizMiner<\/em> delivers detailed industry analysis by tracking over 18 million US business facilities including small businesses, so industries are analyzed at a more granular level than is usually provided.\u00a0 Over 16,000\u00a0 industry segments are included.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with this hint:<\/strong> <em>BizMiner<\/em> categories are SIC-based, but the search tools include the options of keyword, NAICS, or &#8220;Industry Cluster Drilldown.&#8221;\u00a0 Whatever your starting point, each selection leads to a narrower industry segment so you can drill down, for example, from Health Services to Medical Laboratories to Testing Laboratories to Blood Analysis Laboratories, and then choose a 3 or 5 year report, and even narrow that to a particular metro area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should know this database:<\/strong> <em>BizMiner<\/em> includes information vital to building a business plan for an entrepreneurial project, such as Local Market Vitality Profiles, a State Market Index series, and an area demographic series.\u00a0 Reports include sections on business failure rates, market share statistics, emerging vitality, and other data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> Each report in <em>BizMiner<\/em> includes explanations of terms, such as Growth Index Measures or Operational Concentration, providing students a ready reference tool to help them understand the data in the industry segment report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost:<\/strong> Paid by the Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Database of the Week comes to you from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).
