{"id":732,"date":"2010-04-02T11:22:20","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T15:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/?p=732"},"modified":"2015-04-23T11:16:08","modified_gmt":"2015-04-23T15:16:08","slug":"mels-database-of-the-week-for-4210","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/2010\/04\/02\/mels-database-of-the-week-for-4210\/","title":{"rendered":"MEL&#8217;s Database of the Week for 4\/2\/10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to Database of the Week &#8212; a feature from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).\u00a0 These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Database name:<\/strong> <em>RIA Checkpoint, <\/em>from Thomson Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Link:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel\">www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down<em> Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below our banner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Description\/focus:<\/strong> <em>RIA Checkpoint <\/em>is the database for tax research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start with this hint: <\/strong> The link for <em>RIA Checkpoint<\/em> lands at the <strong>Research<\/strong> tab.\u00a0 This is where tax and accounting professionals can search rulings, IRS publications, SEC filings, or accounting standards and regulations.\u00a0 These can be searched by keyword, code, case, or by clicking on <strong>More<\/strong> to bring up specific search templates.\u00a0 Non-professionals will find documents and publications of interest on the <strong>Research<\/strong> page through the link to <em>Form\/Line Finder<\/em>, and on the <strong>Newsstand<\/strong> tab.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why you should know this database:<\/strong> Tax and accounting professionals can use <em>RIA Checkpoint <\/em>to research supporting cases.\u00a0 Some publications that might interest non-professionals can be seen at the <strong>Home<\/strong> tab which includes a link, for example, to an analysis of the tax and benefits provisions of the 2010 Health Care Act.\u00a0 The <strong>Tools<\/strong> tab has calculators for working out payments for autos, mortgages, credit cards, and other business and personal financial concerns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> Students studying tax and accounting can find cases to support answers to tax questions and can use the handy <strong>Citator<\/strong> button to find related cases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost:<\/strong> Paid annually by the Libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Special thanks today to Professor Hatcher for his help in navigating through RIA Checkpoint.\u00a0 As he says, \u201dIt\u2019s not what you know, it\u2019s what you can find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Database of the Week comes to you from the Management &amp; Economics Library (MEL).
