But what if they hold the key to treating a series of health afflictions? Are they safe? The lecture\/presentation is open free to the public. The presentation will be followed by a book signing outside Fowler Hall at 7:15 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Pollan is author of the recent \u201cHow to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence,\u201d as well as other books including \u201cThe Omnivore\u2019s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This Ideas Festival presentation is among many events celebrating Purdue\u2019s sesquicentennial celebration, <a href=\"https:\/\/takegiantleaps.com\/\">150 Years of Giant Leaps<\/a>, which acknowledges the university\u2019s global advancements made in a variety of fields. This event aligns with one of the celebration\u2019s Giant Leaps themes, <a href=\"https:\/\/takegiantleaps.com\/category\/health-longevity\/\">Health, Longevity and Quality of Life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7946\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.lib.purdue.edu\/news\/files\/2019\/02\/Calendar-IF-Pollan-border.jpg?resize=400%2C221&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"What IF Psychedelics Could Heal? He is the author of eight books, six of which have been New York Times best-sellers, including \u201cCooked,\u201d which served as the basis for the 2016 Netflix miniseries of the same name; and \u201cThe Botany of Desire: A Plant\u2019s-Eye View of the World\u201d and \u201cIn Defense of Food,\u201d both of which have inspired PBS documentaries. Pollan also appeared in the Oscar-nominated documentary \u201cFood Inc.,\u201d which was partially based on another of his books, \u201cThe Omnivore\u2019s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.\u201d His work has led him to be chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and has earned him many accolades within his field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow to Change Your Mind,\u201d an immediate No. 1 New York Times best-seller, explores the revolutionary potential psychedelics hold in relieving depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction \u2014 afflictions that have been characteristically difficult to treat.
