Welcome to Database of the Week — a feature from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).\u00a0 These weekly database snapshots will give you basic information about our most relevant and beneficial online resources.<\/p>\n
Database name:<\/strong> Morningstar Document Research, <\/em>from Morningstar.<\/p>\n Link: <\/strong> www.lib.purdue.edu\/mel<\/a>, in the pull down Quick Access to Business Databases<\/em> alpha list right below the Libraries\u2019 search box.<\/p>\n Description\/focus:<\/strong> Morningstar Document Research<\/em> is a database that contains all electronically filed Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents from 1994 to the present.<\/p>\n Start with this hint: <\/strong>The Morningstar Document Research<\/em> home page is the advanced search page.\u00a0 You can search for information about a company by entering the ticker (goog <\/em>for example) or the name of the company.\u00a0 When the company of interest is displayed you can then choose from its SEC filings, or get other details by clicking on the links for Profile<\/strong>, Business <\/strong>Section<\/strong>, Quotes\/Charts\/News, Insider Summary<\/strong>, and others. The main search page includes a focused word search field, geographic filter (country, state, region, others), and a financial filter. Further down on the home screen, you can also see company filings within an industry.\u00a0 The menu on the left includes a link to search for Mutual Funds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Why you should know this database:<\/strong> An important aspect of Morningstar Document Research<\/em> is the ability to search across multiple company document types.\u00a0 It is often used to search for aspects such as \u2018research & development\u2019 or for some key financial element like \u2018poison pill\u2019.\u00a0 Thus a faculty member could research what companies are implementing such things by text-searching the documents\u2026 including the footnotes\u2026 where information is often \u201chidden\u201d.<\/p>\n How this database can be integrated into the curriculum:<\/strong> A researcher can search not only an individual company but can also search for tendencies, activities, actions, etc. across multiple companies or groups of companies within industries.<\/p>\n Cost:<\/strong>\u00a0 5 seats, paid annually by the Libraries and the Accounting and Finance areas in the Krannert School of Management.<\/p>\n ——————————<\/p>\n Database of the Week comes to you from the Management & Economics Library (MEL).
