As we become increasingly dependent on data, data-driven work \u2014 such as data analysis, visualization, and predictive modeling \u2014 has never been more important across different fields. One of the projects of Purdue University\u2019s Integrative Data Science Initiative (IDSI) is \u201cIMPACT Data Science Education: Preparing Undergraduates to Lead into the Future,\u201d which will contribute to the current data science education ecosystem at Purdue by helping faculty integrate data science into undergraduate courses. Digital Humanities Studio Open House Set for Oct. 14 in Purdue\u2019s HSSE Library<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Matt Hannah, assistant professor of digital humanities in the Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies, with members of his ILS 695, \u201cIntroducing Digital Humanities,\u201d course, Spring 2019, at Purdue University<\/p><\/div>\n

Developing and advancing Purdue University\u2019s Digital Humanities (DH) initiative \u2014 an important and growing area in digital scholarship \u2014 is among the many duties of Matt Hannah, assistant professor of DH in Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies (PULSIS).<\/p>\n

Hannah, who arrived at Purdue in March 2018, has been busily laying the foundation for an ongoing and robust discussion about DH and digital scholarship across campus. He has designed and delivered a wide range of DH workshops, taught digital humanities courses, contributed to digital scholarship projects and efforts on campus and beyond, and has established the DH Studio in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education (HSSE) Library.<\/p>\n

To celebrate this growing and vibrant DH initiative, PULSIS will host an open house to launch the DH Studio from 3-6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14<\/strong>. The DH Studio is located in Stewart Center, room 153 (on the first floor of HSSE Library). The event will feature remarks by Kathleen Fitzpatrick, director of DH and a professor of English at Michigan State University. Read more…<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Library Scholars Grant Proposal Deadline Nov. 8; Grants Up to $5K for Access to Unique Collections<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"A<\/a>

A 2017 Library Scholars Grant recipient, Jennifer Kaufmann-Buhler, assistant professor of design history in Purdue University\u2019s Department of Art and Design (College of Liberal Arts) presented the results of her archival research in 2018. Professor Kaufmann-Buhler conducted her research at the Manuscripts and Archives Library of Yale University.<\/p><\/div>\n

Proposals for Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies’ Library Scholars Grant Program (2019-20) can now be submitted. The grant-award program supports access to unique collections of information found around the country and the world.<\/p>\n

Untenured tenure-track faculty members and associate professors tenured effective July 1, 2017, or later, from the Purdue West Lafayette, Fort Wayne, IUPUI, and Northwest campuses, and the Statewide Technology Program, are eligible. The deadline to submit a proposal for the 2019-20 program is Friday, Nov. 8.<\/p>\n

Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies will kick off International Open Access Week (October 21-27) with the announcement of the Leadership in Open Access Award from Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies (PULSIS) and Purdue University Office of the Provost.<\/p>\n

During the week, PULSIS and the Purdue University Press (PUP) will also host a panel discussion, three Open Access information installations on campus, and an Open Access content campaign.<\/p>\n

HSSE Library Launches Monthly \u201cFeatured Databases\u201d Tutorials<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\"HSSE<\/a>Among the many resource and services Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies (PULSIS) offers student and faculty researchers are more than 600 databases. For years, staff in the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management and Economics have offered the \u201cDatabase of the Month<\/a>\u201d feature to help business researchers navigate these rich resources.<\/p>\n

To help humanities\u2019 and social sciences\u2019 researchers, on Sept. 26, staff in the HSSE Library launched a similar series, the HSSE Library \u201cFeatured Databases\u201d tutorials. This ongoing series will cover a wide array of disciplines. The first featured database is ProQuest Research Library, which provides one-stop access to more than 4,000 periodicals. \"High<\/a>Purdue GIS Day Conference 2019<\/a><\/strong>
\nHigh school Students from Crawfordsville Sr. High (Crawfordsville, IN), Huntington North (Huntington, IN), and Southwood Jr.\/Sr. High (Wabash, IN), pictured right, attended High School GIS Day in the Hampton Hall of Civil Engineering on Friday, Sept. 27.<\/p>\n

The college day event, or the Purdue GIS Day Conference, is set for Nov. 7. Submissions for the college day program are due by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25.<\/p>\n

Advancing the Active-Learning Culture at Purdue<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The Active Learning Community of Practice (ALCoP) at Purdue University is comprised of faculty who gather to share ideas, explore active learning strategies, and discuss student outcomes. Facilitated by Susan Modlin, clinical assistant professor of nursing, ALCoP at Purdue meets monthly. Modlin\u2019s role in this community was recently covered by the ITaP Newsroom in \u201cActive Learning Community of Practice\u2019s Focus This Year Is on Diversity and Inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n
