Peter Froehlich to lead Purdue Libraries Publishing Division

March 25th, 2015

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue’s Dean of Libraries James L. Mullins was pleased to announce that Peter Froehlich, Indiana University Press (IUP), will be the new director of the Purdue University Press/head, Scholarly Publishing Services in the Purdue Libraries Publishing Division, effective May 1, 2015.

Froehlich started working at the Indiana University Press in 2006.  Since 2010, he has been the subsidiary rights manager at IUP.  He received his BA degree from the University of California-Berkeley and an MBA from the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University.  Froehlich succeeds Charles Watkinson who left Purdue to become associate university librarian for publishing and director of the University of Michigan Press.

William Harper, chair, Purdue University Press Editorial Board, and professor of health and kinesiology said, “Peter brings both wide-ranging experiences and plucky enthusiasms to the dual positions of director of Purdue University Press and head of Scholarly Publishing Services.  We welcome his appointment and look forward to working with him in our continuous efforts to further advance Purdue’s scholarly publishing impact around the world.”

The Purdue Libraries Publishing Division creates a collaborative environment by uniting Purdue University Press with Scholarly Publishing Services.  The Publishing Division is dedicated to enhancing the impact and extending the reach of academic research and scholarship through the development and dissemination of books, journals, digital collections, innovative electronic products, technical report series and conference proceedings.  The Purdue University Press founded in 1960 is a member of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) and was a founding member of the Library Publishing Coalition (LPC).  Purdue University was one of the first to integrate Library/University Press/Open Access Scholarly Publishing into a single unit in the United States.

Purdue Libraries Database of the Week: Investext, from Thomson Reuters

March 6th, 2015

Welcome to Database of the Week.  This feature from the Roland G. Parrish Library of Management & Economics is intended to give you a brief introduction to a database that you may not know, with only basic information to get you started.  Hopefully, you will be tempted to explore this or other databases.

This Week’s Featured Database:  Investext, from Thomson Reuters

Find it: www.lib.purdue.edu/parrish, Under the column headed Collections, click on List of Business Databases. This database only works in the Internet Explorer browser.

Description/focus: Investext is a database of analyst reports from major investment banks and other investment advisors. It is a segment of the larger database, Thomson One.  Written by analysts at more than 1,600 investment banks and independent research firms, Thomson Reuters embargoed research collections offer analysis of companies, industries, products and markets across the globe. The reports, embargoed for an average of 14 days from production, provide insight, including forecasts and opinions, from the most sought-after industry experts.

Start with this hint: Choose Investext from the list of business databases to be taken to the Thomson One database interface. To find investment analyst reports hover over Company Views at the top of the page, then over Research, and then choose Company Research. By default, you may be given a company’s analyst reports. Click Advanced Research Page on the right hand side of the window to see search options and to search for another company. On this page, type YUM in the company box, click on YUM BRANDS, INC and click Search at the bottom of the page. You will be provided with a list of analyst reports on this company. From here, you can export the list of reports, browse and download whole reports, or download specific parts of a report.

Click here to see the basics of searching Investext.

Why you should know this database: Investment analyst reports are an important document for analyzing a company.  These documents are not easily found free on the web.

How this will help students: The analysis is useful for competitor research as well as for interview preparation.
